Solace is built to work without a backend. There is no Solace server, no analytics pipeline, and no account system — this policy explains exactly where your data goes instead.
What stays only on your device
Your Keychain-stored credentials (an optional cloud AI provider key and, if you set one, your own USDA FoodData Central key) never leave your device and are never included in iCloud sync, logs, crash reports, or analytics of any kind.
What syncs via your iCloud account
Your profile (body stats, activity level, allergen and diet exclusions, scoring weights), your diary entries, and your AI provider configuration (excluding the key itself) sync across your devices using Apple's CloudKit, under your own iCloud account. Solace cannot access this data — it is stored in your personal iCloud container, the same as Photos or Notes.
Apple Health
If you opt in, Solace writes the calories and macros you log to Apple Health. This is one-way and write-only — Solace does not read existing Health data, and nothing you log to Health is sent anywhere else.
Camera and photos
The camera is used to scan barcodes and, if you choose, to capture a meal photo for AI estimation. Barcode scans are processed on-device. A meal photo is only sent off-device if you have explicitly enabled and configured a cloud AI provider (see below) — otherwise no photo ever leaves your phone.
Third-party data sources
Barcode lookups query Open Food Facts, a crowd-sourced, non-commercial database, and generic food search queries the USDA FoodData Central API, a US government public-domain database. These lookups send only the barcode or search term you enter — no account or profile data is attached.
Optional cloud AI (bring your own key)
Photo-based meal estimation is optional and off by default. If you enable it, you supply your own AI provider endpoint, model, and API key, and Solace sends the photo you choose to log directly to that provider on your behalf. No embedded or Solace-operated AI key is ever used, and estimates are always shown as an editable draft — never saved automatically.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the "last updated" date above will change and the new version will be published at this same URL.
